Can You Wear A Regular Swimsuit While Pregnant?

Can You Wear A Regular Swimsuit While Pregnant?

Today, we’re chatting about a question we often hear: ‘Can you wear a regular swimsuit while pregnant?’. Let’s chat through what to consider, when a regular swimsuit might still work, when it might be time to switch, and we’ll also highlight some fabulous longer-length swimsuits and tankinis that we love for expecting mamas.

Can You Wear A Regular Swimsuit While Pregnant?

The short answer is yes, but there are a few things to bear in mind. In the early stages of your pregnancy, when your belly is still small and your body hasn’t shifted too dramatically, many women absolutely feel comfortable slipping into their regular pre-pregnancy swimsuit. Experts suggest that in those early weeks, there’s no reason to automatically discard what you already own.

However, as your pregnancy progresses, your bust may expand, your tummy will grow, your shape will shift, and your usual swimwear may no longer feel like it fit the way it used to. You may find your swimsuit may become a bit difficult to wear also also a bit uncomfortable. It also may not provide the support or coverage you’ll want.

How To Weight It Up

Support matters, and your bust may be bigger, heavier and more sensitive. You may want straps, cups or built-in bras that can handle this change.
A one-piece or bikini that was super snug pre-pregnancy may become restrictive. You might find the material pulling across your tummy or under your bump, particularly in your third trimester.

You could mix & match. Why not keep bottoms you like which still fit and change your top? You may want more coverage or less coverage, depending on how you feel. The key is that you feel comfortable and you look and feel like you.

You will find that early pregnancy will give you more flexibility with regular swimsuits, and later on, you may prefer something designed for a baby bump.

When To Do The Swap

If your regular suit is tight, uncomfortable, or you’re adjusting size significantly then it might be the time. If you’re past early pregnancy or you simply want more comfort and support, that’s also a good time to look at other options.

Look for swimwear with extra stretch across the tummy, ruching that accommodates growth, adjustable straps or tops designed for bust changes.

A regular swimsuit can absolutely work for part of your pregnancy, especially if nothing feels off, it fits, and you’re comfortable. But don’t feel obligated to tough it out if you’re no longer enjoying it. Your swimwear should highlight your comfort, confidence and joy in your body and your pregnancy.

Our Recommendations

Since we’re in the business of great swimwear, here are two styles we especially recommend for pregnant ladies. These aren’t maternity styles, so you may find that in later stages of your pregnancy, they no longer offer you the fit you desire, but these styles can offer a great option for much of your pregnancy – and also once you’ve had your baby.

Longer Length Swimsuit

We love a longer-length one-piece because it gives you that little extra coverage beneath the bump, which can make you feel supported, smooth and comfortable. The extra length means you’re less likely to feel like the suit is riding up or pulling. Choose one, like our Stella Longer Length Clipback Swimsuit, which has high-quality fabric with good stretch. As you grow, this style can transition wonderfully into a postpartum swimsuit too.

Tankini

If you prefer two-pieces but want more flexibility, a tankini is a charming winner. With a longer top that covers your tummy, a tankini like this Sport Tankini offers both style and comfort. A tankini is a good choice if you’re uncertain about how your body will shift or if you prefer to show less tummy.

Whatever you choose, remember you deserve to feel great at the pool or beach. Whether you’re wearing your pre-pregnancy suit in week 12, or you’ve upgraded to something else in week 30, the key is you feel comfortable, confident and ready to enjoy the water.
